MALARIA PROGRAMME IN MIZORAM

War against malaria was started in Mizoram from 24th October, 1957 under National Malaria Control Programme. The control programme was converted to Eradication programme in 1957. National Malaria Eradication Programme was renamed as National Anti- Malaria Programme in 1999 with the same objective of Revised Pattern 1995 to reduce morbidity and mortality due to malaria. The entire state is declared as High Risk Area for Malaria since 1996 as per guidelines under Malaria Action Plan 1995. The name of Anti- Malaria Programme was again changed to National vector Borne Disease Control Programme in 2003. Under this programme Intensified Malaria Control Project was launched in 2005 in the state funded by World Bank (GFATM) which is still ongoing.

The Director of Health Services is the overall administrator of the programme where state programme officer/Joint Director (Malaria) is identified subordinated by Deputy Director (Malaria) at the state Headquarter. There are 9 (nine) health oriented district in the state where there are no District Malaria Officer in the District to look after the programme in the district level as per guidelines of Revised Pattern. There are 366 SUB-Centre ,57 PHCs and 9 CHCs in the state. The main activities undertaken are as follows:-

1 Aims and Objectives:- The main Aims and objectives of the programme is to reduce morbidity and mortality due to malaria under IMCP, aim is to reduce mortality by 50% and morbidity by 30% at the end of the project, which was launched in Aptil 2005 in Mizoram State is going.

2 Surveillance- The entire state is targeted for surveillance where MPWs are to take blood smear of any fever cases suspected for presumptive dose which are examined in the PHC/CHC/Hosp for diagnosis. The survellance activities for the last 5 years i.e. 2004 to 2008 are as follows:-

3 Spray:- Two Rounds of DDT spray in a year is regular practice for reduction of malaria by vector control . The achievement for the last five years are as follows.

4 Impregantion of Bed net:- For vector control community bed nets are being impregnated by synthetic pyrethroid to supplement the DDT spray. Government of India had supplied 1,70,000 Nos of single bed nets during 2008 which had been distributed to all district for distribution to BPL families as per norm laid down by Govt of India.

5 Information, Education and Communication:- IEC activities in the form of Awareness Campaign, Leaflets, Folders, Slogan and Video flips are being done. AIR, DDKS and Local Cable TVs are utilized for the purpose.

6 Commodities:- Commodities like Anti Malaria Drugs etc are mainly supplied in kind by Govt of India along with flow. Additional materials are procured by the state out of fund received from time to time as per requirement along with the materials which are not supplied by Govt of India.

7 Training:- Training are being conducted to Health personnels and NGOs as per availability of fund. The main categories are (i) Medical Officers(ii) MPWs (iii)Laboratory Technician(iv) NGOs(v) DDC/FTD holders and ASHA.

8 Drug Distribution Centre/Fever Treatment Depot:-To supplement S/C for distribution of Anti Malaria Drugs, NGOs are engaged in each village as Drug Distribution Centre and Fever Treatment Depot. There are 1283 Nos of DDCs and 200 FTDs in the state covering each and every village of the state.
